Happy New Year Everybody! The gig went well last night. It was at the old Red Arrow Roadhouse, now renamed the The Rodeo Bar and Grill. Life imitated art as my band, The Van Dyke Revue (a classic rock and soul band) walked into the a bar that might as well have been called "Bob's Country Bunker." All that was missing was the chicken wire protecting the us from flying beer bottles. The mechanical bull opposite the stage should have clued us in, I think. We opened with "Can't Turn You Loose" and "Sweet Home Chicago / Everyday." The calls for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" began as soon as my Dad got his violin out for our John Mellencamp numbers. We won the crowd over, and the owner is hiring us back. Always a measure of how well one does.
I've got exactly 18 new country songs on my Mp3 player. ("New country" meaning "Just like 70's pop with lyrics describing sex on a tractor, or how the USA will kick your ass," etc..) I put it through the system during the breaks, counting each song with the band just in case it skipped onto #19. This would be because #19 was set to "Why Not Feed the People" by Stephen Stills, a comment made to Stills by Jimmy Carter. It would not have gone over well should Stills' song (considerably better than Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue") have played for the two-steppers.
