I just heard Bush gave out 19 pardons. Thats kind of skimpy, to write the least. Its nothing new. Clinton did it for Marc Rich, and Bush I did it for some of the Iran-Contra people.
I'm making a prediciton that Bush isn't done yet. I believe he will issue some midnight pardons of some of the criminals within his administration. Maybe VP Cheney for lying about torturing human beings. Or perhaps Scooter Libby, in addition to the clemency he already provided.
My Dad wondered if the photo above will be the one Bush is remembered for, and I think he might be on to something. Either the one in which a furious Iraqi flings two shoes at Bush or the "Mission Accomplished" photo. Think about the images that pop in your mind when you hear the name "Nixon" (The double peace signs from Air Force One, right?), "Ford" (Stumbling down the stairs from the same plane would be my guess), "Carter" (The cardigan speech next to the fire? Presiding over the shaking hands of Sadat and Begin?), Reagan (At the Berlin wall, right? Maybe hugging the families of the Challenger?), Bush I (He was kind of unmemorable, wasn't he? Perhaps vomiting on a Japanese diplomat?), Clinton (Next to the teenager he got caught blowing him, of course), and Bush II. I have a hard time picturing Bush with anything but a look of surprise and awe, like I would look if I got to fly on the space shuttle or how my son looked the first time he met Mickey Mouse. You know, like the-deer-caught-in-the-headlights-just-realized-I'm -in-over-my-head-can't-believe-I-agreed-to-play-the-part-without-learning-the-lines-but-now-I've-got-the-lead-role-and-the-is-audience-waiting-for-me-look. You know the one.
